Review of the VS Sassoon Curl Secret

Hey lovelies! I hope that you are all having a great day so far. Today I want to talk about a cool product to hit the market recently - the VS Sassoon Curl Secret. You might have seen it advertised on TV and been curious about it so I thought it was my duty as your trusty beauty blogger to share my honest opinion about this unique looking product.

I never thought that something that in no way resembles a curling wand could create such beautiful curls! I love the idea behind this product and how innovative it is.

As I have come to expect from owning a few VS Sassoon products, the VS Curl Secret comes in a box accompanied by a storage pouch, heat protection mat, a cleaning tool and clear instructions on how to use it. I love the fact that VS Sassoon products always contain these extra bits and pieces as they make all the difference with using the product.

The Curl Secret itself is a dark purple colour that looks like a straightener with a ball at the end of it that is actually a ceramic barrel that does all the hard work for you. It is a pretty nifty and unique design, but that also means that I had absolutely no idea how to use it when I first opened it! Reading the instructions and watching a video cleared that up pretty quickly though.

I have relatively long, straight hair so I was pleasantly surprised at how well this product worked and how easy it was to achieve beautifully defined curls.
The way that the Curl Secret is designed to be used is for you to place the barrel a few inches from your roots and then close it. Once you do that, then it pulls the remainder of the hair inside the barrel. You then hear four beeps, with the last one being a fast beep indicating that hair is ready to be released. The results are beautiful curls!
The product is designed to be able to cater for all your curling needs. It has two heat settings and three timer settings (8, 10 and 12 seconds) so you can easily create loose beach curls as well as beautifully ringlets with the slide of a button.

I have to admit that I encountered problems when I first started using the styler because it is a bit tricky to use and takes practice in getting it right.

In order to get the best results from the Curl Secret, I highly recommend that you:
  1. Brush your hair well so that there are no knots or tangles
  2. Curl small sections of hair at a time (no larger than an inch is recommended). I also suggest slightly twisting the hair as an extra precaution. I found that reduced the chances of it getting tangled within the styler as my hair is relatively long
  3. Make sure that the remainder of the hair is away from the styler so that it does not get caught up in the barrel.

You have to be very careful when using this product because it is very easy to get your hair stuck in it if you are not careful. In my experience, as long as you follow the above guidelines then you will never (or significantly reduce the chances!) get your hair stuck in the styler.

Lucky for me, most of the time I have been able to quickly and easily remove my hair from the styler when it has been stuck. However there has been one occasion where I could not get the hair out and that resulted in that particular piece being ripped out of the styler and what remained was extremely damaged and fried! This is something that I would suggest be improved in the design of the product - perhaps there could be a release button that can instantly release the hair tangled within the product.

Regardless of the fact that the styler took a bit of practice to figure out the best way of using it, I still think it is a fabulous product. It requires no twisting and does all the hard work for you. It does exactly what it claims to do and it does it well. I have done a video review where I do a demonstration of how to use the product and the amazing results.

I love how unique this product is and that it works really well in curling my hair. As with any other curling product, if you have thick hair (like me) then curling your hair will take a while. I found that using this product significantly reduced the time that it took to curl my hair - it saved me at least 20 minutes! It must be the fact that the curls it produces have great lasting power so I don't need to go back and fix up sections of hair that I had already curled.

Overall, I love the curls that this product creates and love the fact that they last several days before falling out even without using any hairspray. I would recommend this product if you have short to medium length hair or don't mind fiddling around with a styler in order to figure out how it works. It retails at $172.95 and you can buy it at Myer, Target and Big W.

Disclaimer: The VS Sassoon Curl Secret was kindly sent to me for review as part of a trial team. I was not paid for my review nor am I affiliated with the company in any way. My 100% honest opinion, as always :)

Terrible curler, burnt my hair. I had a straightener in VS brand which then made my hair all split. definitely not recommended.
